King Crab legs are delicious, decadent and definitely ranks among the top highly-prized types of seafood today. There are actually many different species of king crab, about 120 in all, each with a different size, look, and most importantly, taste! The most commonly eaten types of king crab are the red king crab, the blue king crab and the golden king crab. The red king crab is the most popular, with a rich and very distinct taste that is prized around the world. Blue king crabs are much sweeter, and have noticeably larger claws. Golden king crab is relatively small compared to other king crab species, and they have the mildest flavor of the most commonly eaten types of king crab.

Just as there are many species of king crab, there are multiple ways that you can cook it! We’re going to focus on the four most popular methods for cooking king crab, which are pretty easy and result in a delicious and moist crab dinner or treat. It’s important to note that king crab legs are often cooked and flash frozen before being sold in typical grocery store markets. If the crab is pre-cooked, your cooking time is will usually be on the lower side. Make sure to check with your local grocery store and ask if their crab legs are pre-cooked!

Steaming:

To steam king crab, you need to take a large pot (with a lid) and fill it about one-third of the way with water. Heat the water without the lid until it comes to a boil. When the water is boiling, attach a colander in the pot and place your crab legs inside, then cover the pot with the lid to steam them. Generally, steaming takes about 10 – 15 minutes.

Boiling:

To boil king crab, you will need to take a large pot (without lid) and fill it with water–it should be filled enough to submerge the crab legs fully. Bring the water to a boil, and then lower the heat until the water is only simmering. When the water is simmering, drop your crab legs into the water and continue to simmer for about 5 – 10 minutes.

Grilling:

To grill king crab, you will need a grill with a controllable temperature. First, brush your crab legs with enough oil to keep them from sticking to the grill. Grill them at 325 degrees for about 5 minutes on each side.

Baking:

To bake king crab, you will need to pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Then, take a large sheet pan, preferably non-stick, and place your crab legs on the pan. Take a lemon and squeeze it over the crab legs–this will add a little zing to the taste and help the crab legs stay moist in the oven. Then, add enough hot water (it needs to be hot!) to cover the bottom of the sheet pan. Next, wrap the entire pan tightly in foil–you don’t want the steam escaping the pan, so a tight seal is essential. Finally, place the sheet pan into the oven and bake for about 10 minutes.

And that’s it! These four methods for cooking king crab are easy and will ensure that your crab legs are moist and delicious. Cooking king crab may be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, it will become second nature. If you are attempting to cook a lot of king crab—say, enough legs for an entire party—you will probably want to stick with baking the legs, as attempting to boil, grill or steam a few dozen crab legs with definitely be a pain!
