Dungeness Crab

There are hundreds of types of crabs in the world, but not all of them are practical for eating. We’re going to focus, only, on the best crabs for eating in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Here’s a quick guide to the varieties of crab to help you catch, clean, cook and make yummy recipes.

Dungeness Crab

Dungeness crab is the cream of the crop of west coast shellfish. Even it’s Latin name, Cancer magister, commands respect from lesser sea creatures. A popular delicacy in all areas surrounding their habitat, they are revered for their tender heart and sweet tasting meat. Many crab festivals are held in honor of this great crustacean magistar, Sir Dungeness. From Washington to California you can hear faint echos over the Pacific of “All hail thy Dungeness“.

Blue Crabs

Blue crabs are the the hottest thing to hit the shelves in the crabbing world. This type of crab is so easy to catch and full of  delicious sweet flavors. Snow Crabs

Snow crabs are the “ladies of the sea”- all legs and petite body. Having a leg span of two feet from leg tip to leg tip they are a huge crustacean. King Crabs

Red Rock Crabs

The red rock crab is a pretty tricky fellow to find in restaurants and stores, because it’s generally considered to be too small for commercial crab catching. Fortunately, if you know how to catch crabs or know any friendly sport fisherman, you’ll have a much easier time getting hold of some red rock crab. Soft shelled crabs are an increasingly popular treat for many seafood lovers due to their excellent texture, rich taste and relative ease in preparing them.
