From September 15 to October 15, we honor Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) —a time to celebrate the bright culture, history, and contributions of the Hispanic community. This period marks the independence anniversaries of several Central American countries, highlighting the enduring spirit of the Hispanic community.

At Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB), we are proud to collaborate with the SWOG Cancer Research Network Latin America Initiative (SLAI) to advance oncological research. Our mission is to improve outcomes for Hispanic individuals living with cancer. As we observe HHM, let’s take a moment to reflect on and appreciate the significant impact Hispanic people have made in various fields and continue to make every day. Every September, we come together to shine a light on blood cancers—leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma—which affect millions of people around the world. Blood cancers are among the most challenging and complex cancers to diagnose and treat. The disease can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity. Through increased awareness, education, and research, we can make a difference. These lifesaving efforts help ensure early detection and better treatment options for those impacted by blood cancers.

At Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB), we pioneer statistical methods for clinical trials that show which new treatments work and which tests identify optimal treatments for individual patients. The next CRAB-led oncological study could be the one that saves many lives. Please support Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB) with a financial donation and together we can bring hope, support, and progress towards a cancer free future.

Each year on August 9th, nations worldwide come together to commemorate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This significant date marks the inaugural meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982. The observance serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural tapestry and profound historical legacy of Indigenous peoples globally. Indigenous communities have made contributions across various domains, from environmental stewardship to groundbreaking medical discoveries. Their knowledge has enriched humanity's understanding of the world around us and has provided invaluable insights into sustainable agricultural practices. Many everyday items trace their origins to Indigenous knowledge and innovations, underscoring their pivotal role in shaping modern technology. Despite their invaluable contributions, Indigenous communities continue to face systemic marginalization and economic disparities.

At Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB), we understand the profound impact of health disparities on Indigenous and other marginalized communities. To address the importance of representation of diverse populations in clinical trials for the generalizability of trial results, we support the SWOG Cancer Research Network’s efforts to reduce structural barriers to ensure equity and representativeness in clinical trials. As we mark this International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we reflect on their profound contributions and recommit ourselves to building a future where Indigenous knowledge, culture, and human rights are respected and celebrated worldwide. In August 2024, Antje Hoering, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB), traveled to Portland, Oregon to attend the board meeting of the American Statistical Association - ASA, a professional organization dedicated to advancing the practice of statistics (https://www.amstat.org/). This meeting took place right before the Joint Statistical Meeting (JSM), an annual event that serves as a crucial gathering for leaders and experts within the statistical community to address emerging challenges and shape the future of statistical science (https://lnkd.in/d4AaSd34).

Emily Goren, PhD, Senior Biostatistician attended the conference and presented her research on “Comprehensive simulation-based comparison of power calculation methods for the log-rank test.” This work provides practitioners with valuable guidance and emphasizes the need to derive the distribution of the log-rank test under general alternatives. SWOG Cancer Research Network director, Michael LeBlanc, PhD and CRAB founder, John Crowley, PhD are co-authors. The session drew keen interest from attendees, highlighting CRAB's commitment to advancing biostatistical research and dedication to staying at the forefront of statistical advancements, furthering our mission of conquering cancer.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and has been widely celebrated by African Americans through the decades. In 2021, Juneteenth became the latest federal holiday and is steadily gaining the recognition it deserves. Juneteenth is enjoyed through celebratory gatherings with loved ones, rest, and remembrance. This important holiday is also a reminder of the necessary work to support African Americans working towards a more equitable society.

Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB) work to help bring more equity in cancer research includes our collaboration with Dr. Gareth Morgan at NYU Langone. Smoldering Multiple Myeloma (SMM) is a non-symptomatic pre-curser to Multiple Myeloma (MM). It is not understood why African Americans progress to symptomatic MM faster than European Americans. The goal of the study is to determine whether the reasons are environmental or genetic in nature. As a cancer research organization supporting clinical trials development, it is important to understand how race may factor in on positive health outcomes for all walks of life.

May is National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month. Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB) works with SWOG Cancer Research Network SDMC & Operations Office on our Melanoma committee which is a designated group of experts who specialize in Melanoma cancer. Melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer compared to the more common forms of skin cancer such as Basal cell carcinoma and Squamous cell carcinoma. According to estimates made from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, 100,640 Americans will be diagnosed with melanoma.

Unusual moles, family medical history and exposure to natural or artificial sunlight (such as tanning beds) over extended periods of time can increase the risk of melanoma. Skin exams, biopsies and routine health exams and of course using sun safety measures are all great strategies in early detection and prevention of Melanoma.

Our melanoma committee’s expertise and collaborative efforts contribute to advancements in melanoma research, treatment, and patient care. As a proud partner of the SWOG SDMC we support a few melanoma cancer research studies such S2000 and the iMATCH pilot, S2101, which includes patients with melanoma and patients with head and neck cancers. Let’s share the importance of prioritizing our skin health during National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month!

National Cancer Research Month, led by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), is recognized every year in the month of May, to highlight the importance of lifesaving cancer research. Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB) works diligently in the field of cancer research as rates of cancer increase around the nation. From creating new therapeutic studies to exploring various cancer clinical trials, CRAB’s mission to conquer cancer often faces challenges such as funding limitations, regulatory hurdles, and the complexity of the disease itself.

Despite these challenges, Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB) has made significant strides in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through continued research. CRAB collaborates with a variety of organizations and institutions to accelerate progress in the fight against cancer. Early detection methods and understanding of cancer biology have contributed to increased survival rates and improved quality of life for individuals diagnosed with cancer. We do not yet have a cure and until we do, our fight to conquer cancer continues! To support CRABs efforts in cancer research, please consider donating on our website.
