Freezing Crab Meat

There is nothing better than enjoying some delicate crab meat when crabbing season is still months away. What better way than to have your own freezer stocked up with crab meat?

Whether you have cooked your crabs, want to freeze the legs raw or have made some soup or crab cakes we will point you in the right direction to help you preserve all the flavors that your crabs have to offer.

Crab legs

So you caught yourself a hefty batch of crabs, cleaned them right away and now would like to freeze them? Simple -break off the end pieces of the legs (you don’t want them to puncture the freezer bags and they don’t have any meat in them anyhow) place them in sealable freezer bags and make sure most of the air is out of the bag. Write the date on the bag and freeze for up to 2-3 months. Or vacuum seal for 6-8 months.

If you froze them right away, then they will keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days before cooking them.

 

On the same topic as freezing crab legs…

I have sometimes defrosted snow crab legs and ended up with leftovers. If this happens to you here’s what you do. Peel the legs so you are left with only the crab meat. Put the meat in a freezer bag and add enough milk to cover all the meat. Put the meat in the freezer (yes, you heard me correctly, you can re-freeze your crab) and it will keep for 2-3 months.

When you defrost the crab meat simply strain the milk and voila you have crab meat with all the flavors and texture like it just came out of the ocean.

Note- I mentioned Snow crab but this would work with King crab, Dungeness or Blue crab as well.

 

Freezing cooked, shelled crab meat (as in the crab meat and nothing else).

This is the best tip I have ever come across when freezing crab meat, Thank you internet! Add milk to your freezer bag before freezing your crab and your frozen crab meat will hold all the flavors and texture of the meat. When you defrost your crab meat, strain the milk.

I have also used this method when I have purchased previously frozen crab legs and they were too salty for my liking. I soaked them for an hour in milk and the milk took the salty taste away.

 

Freezing Crab Soup

Crab soup is one of my favorite things to freeze. I like to plan ahead for those rainy, blustery days when you really need some delicious comfort food. Frozen crab soup is a perfect remedy.

Make your soup and let it cool. Put your soup into sealable container and write the date on the lid. The Soup will keep in the freezer for 4-5 months.

 

Freezing Crab Cakes

Make your favorite batch of crab cakes. Separate them by using wax paper (this is important). Put them in a sealable freezer bag and write the date on the bags. Your cooked crab cakes will keep for 4-6 months.
