Counting Crab Calories with Crab Nutrition Facts
If you are looking to find the health benefits of crab and just how many calories are in your crab meal then you have come to the right place.
Crabs are low in fat and high in nutritional content. If you are preparing to be on a low fat, low carb diet like Atkins, the Zone, South Beach diet and even the P90X nutritional plan, then incorporating crab meat into your diet is a wise move.
Crab meat is a great source of protein and contains key minerals that help you recover quickly from a workout and gives you energy while you are working out. Crab also helps to build strong teeth and bones. It boosts our immune system and keeps our skin looking healthy and youthful.
But the number one reason why you should eat crab meat is because it tastes great and it is currently on the high level of seafood sustainability.
We compared the calorie count of different crab types to a typical boneless skinless chicken breast weighing 4 oz. and this is what we came up with:
- Chicken breast (boneless skinless) 4 oz. = 190 calories
- Dungeness crab (meat only) 4 oz. = 125 calories
- Blue Swimmer Crab (meat only) 4 oz. = 116 calories
- Alaska King Crab (meat only) 4 oz. = 109 calories
- Alaskan Snow Crab (meat only) 4 oz. = 90 calories
- Imitation crab 4 oz. = 108 calories
Oddly Snow crab, which is the least expensive crab, aside from imitation crab, has the least amount of calories. If you buy frozen snow crab the price is usually comparable to chicken breast and is your better bet health-wise.
One word of caution when eating crab though –all crabs have a high content of sodium. If you are eating crab regularly, make sure you are not adding any extra salt to your meals or eat any other foods that are high in sodium. Also drink plenty of water with your crabs. The water counteracts the sodium.
